Ondo Government Bans Graduation Ceremonies in Nursery and JSS Classes
The Ondo State Government has announced a ban on graduation ceremonies for pupils in nursery classes and students completing Junior Secondary School (JSS 3). The new directive applies to both public and private schools across the state.
According to the state’s Ministry of Education, graduation events will now be limited to Primary 6 and Senior Secondary School 3 (SS 3), which are recognised as official exit points in the nation’s education system. The government explained that the decision was taken to ease financial pressure on parents, curb exploitative practices in schools, and refocus attention on the academic purpose of schooling rather than elaborate celebrations.
In addition to the ban, the state also directed schools to stop compelling parents to buy new textbooks every academic year, insisting that siblings should be able to reuse materials. The government further warned that unaccredited schools operating in the state will face closure, as part of wider reforms aimed at sanitising the education sector.
Officials stressed that the policy is not intended to stifle celebration but to ensure that resources are channelled toward meaningful learning. The state government assured stakeholders that it remains committed to raising standards in both public and private schools while reducing unnecessary costs for families.
