The Katsina State Government has approved the release of ₦20 million for each Local Government Area to carry out renovation and rehabilitation of graveyards across the state.
According to the state authorities, the move is aimed at restoring dignity to burial sites and ensuring that graveyards are well maintained for public use. Officials noted that many of the cemeteries had fallen into poor condition over the years, with broken fences, overgrown weeds, and inadequate access routes.
The government explained that the funds will cover fencing, clearing, and other necessary works to improve the state of the graveyards. Community leaders and local councils are expected to supervise the projects to ensure proper execution.
The initiative has drawn mixed reactions, with some residents welcoming the gesture as a mark of respect for the dead, while others argue that the funds could have been channeled into pressing social needs such as healthcare and education.
