The Federal Government has defended its decision to raise the cost of obtaining international passports, insisting that the adjustment was necessary to sustain efficient service delivery.
According to the Ministry of Interior, the review of passport fees was informed by rising operational costs and the need to upgrade facilities for faster processing. Officials explained that the Nigeria Immigration Service requires better funding to meet international standards, improve security features, and curb racketeering in the issuance process.
A spokesperson noted that the government is committed to eliminating delays that often frustrate applicants. He added that the new pricing structure would help cover production expenses, reduce dependence on subsidies, and ensure that applicants receive passports within a reasonable timeframe.
The Federal Government urged Nigerians to view the adjustment as part of a broader reform to strengthen travel document security and improve service nationwide. It also assured citizens that measures are being put in place to protect applicants from extortion by middlemen.
