The Ebonyi State Government has approved a fresh wage increase for civil servants, raising the minimum monthly salary from N70,000 to N90,000.
The announcement was made on Friday following a review of the current economic situation and the growing demand for improved workers’ welfare. According to the state authorities, the adjustment is designed to ease the burden of rising costs of living on employees and their families.
Government officials explained that the decision reflects Governor Francis Nwifuru’s commitment to prioritizing the welfare of the workforce and ensuring that salaries remain in line with prevailing economic realities.
The development makes Ebonyi one of the few states in the federation offering a minimum wage significantly above the national benchmark of N30,000. Workers across various ministries, departments, and agencies are expected to begin receiving the new pay structure with immediate effect.
Labour unions in the state are expected to issue an official response in the coming days, but early reactions from civil servants suggest the move has been welcomed as a relief amid Nigeria’s current economic pressures.
